Not With ads, probably for free,

Then the answer would be Social bookmarking for sure because in case of directory submissions only 0.01% of directories can send you some traffic and in case of social bookmarking most of these submission can help you in gaining traffic.

Bookmarking sites like Technorati, Digg, Facebook, Delicious did wonders for me. My opinion is to go for bookmarketing sites.

For niche selection, i would say, select the one which you are passionate about and not thinking which would earn you better. Because any niche in the web can make you earn if you have good quality content and topics which you actually know to write well.

Traffic from Search engine is good for earn money on Google AdSense. Traffic from social bookmarking site will generate very less google adsense clicks and income also low.
You will try to get traffic from SE like Google, yahoo etc.
