Does anyone know what application on a MAC I can use to create an audio file?

If yes then audacity is one free and good software.

MP3 audio files are highly compatible with audio programs on the Macintosh computer. Download the Mac version of a free audio editing program, such as Audacity

There are many free tools available for Mac to create a audio file like Audacity. Go and get one and create your audio file.
