How can I solve laptop freeze?

I have HP dv6-2174tx laptop with win 7 home premium as OS and eset smart security for protection. The system hangs when there is a loss of power supply in my bsnl teracom type II modem.This happens frequently.atleast twice or thrice in a week.There is no other option but to press the power off button and restart the system.I have also tried to update the drivers,but the system says that all the drivers are up to date.help me solve the problem

I think there is some internet consuming applications running which is responsible. Try disabling background and startup programs and check if problem persists.
