how the digg or the other social bookmarking sites are useful to us? Only sign up is enough? or we have to update anything in those? I have a doubt, how these sites give the instant traffic?

Social Bookmarking websites like digg.com, propellor.com , mixx.com etc are good for submitting your website stories ie blog posts because they can help you in getting visitors along with some backlinks which can help in your search engine optimization.
If you submit a story which is never read before and has some really unique stuff you can expect the story to be heavily voted by other members of these websites , which makes the submitted story to be listed on the homepage where the majority of the traffic exists and in return you get instant visitors traffic to your websites.
Example : submitting a story about the latest election results with the information not found anywhere else can get your story to the top. Along with this other people would rewrite or repost your story and give you backlinks.
