USB2.0 is mostly used nowadays technology. USB 2.0 gives speeds upto 480mbps. USB3.0 is upcoming technology which will be faster than SATA. It will transfer data more speedily. USB3.0 is not backward compatible with USB2.0. USB3.0 gives speeds upto 4.8 Gbps.

Nope though USB 3.0 is backward compatible i.e. u can use 2.0 devices in 3.0 ports u will get the peak speed permitted by 2.0 which is 480 Mb/s

Since the change is in hardware a software upgrade wont help. You may connect a usb 3.0 add in card provided ur motherboard has free slots.
